Lawyers are likely to stay away from courts across the State on Wednesday and Thursday, in protest against the move to include legal education under the National Commission for Higher Education and Research (NCHER).
The Bar Council of India and the Karnataka State Bar Council (KSBC) have appealed to lawyers to stay away from court proceedings, according to S Srinivas Babu, Vice-President, KSBC.
Babu, however, hastened to add that lawyers won’t be compelled to abstain from courts. “It’s just our request to the entire legal fraternity to stay away from courts on these two days as a mark of protest against the proposed legislation,” he said.
The legal fraternity wants the Union Government to remove legal profession and education from the ambit of the Higher Education and Research (HER) Bill, 2011 introduced in the Rajya Sabha on December 27, 2011. The KSBC fears the Bill will “disable” it.
Meanwhile, a member of the Bar Council of India, Bhoje Gowda told reporters that the Higher Education Research Bill, 2011, the National Accreditation Regulatory Authority for Higher Education Institutions Bill, 2010, Foreign Educational Institutions (Regulation of Entry and Operations) Bill, 2010 and the National Law Schools Bill, 2011, are an attempt to allow the entry of foreign institutions in the country.
