Aero India blaze: Owners of 60 cars untraceable

Ownership of as many as 60 of the 277 vehicles which caught fire at the parking lot of Aero India show on February 23 is yet to be established.

Home Minister M B Patil said of the 277 vehicles, 251 were completely gutted. “Officials are unable to find the engine and chassis numbers of 60 vehicles. So, their owners are yet to be traced,” he added.

The minister was speaking after distributing cheques to the owners of 10 cars that were destroyed in the fire. According to the minister, 26 vehicles have suffered partial damage.

The government, the Regional Transport Office and insurance companies came together and opened a counter to provide quick relief to those who lost their vehicles. Of them, 10 cases have been cleared by Oriental Insurance Company, he said.

“For those without insurance, aid will be given from the chief minister’s relief fund from a humanitarian point of view,” the minister promised.

Patil held a meeting with RTO and insurance company officials to discuss the possibility of expediting the process of clearing insurance claims.
