Following a social media message that four terrorists from Jammu and Kashmir had infiltrated the state, the police were put on high alert in Bengaluru and other places on Thursday.

The message that the terrorists were in the state to ruin the Republic Day celebrations went viral on Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp on Thursday morning, said a senior internal security division official. Commissioners and IGPs were directed to beef up security in crowded areas.

Police personnel were deployed at major government offices, malls, markets, temples and bus and railway stations on Thursday evening. They checked details of guests staying at various hotels.

The DG and IG offices received messages on Friday that no untoward incidents occurred in the state. Following information that the terrorists may target Malleswaram, security was strengthened in and around the area. In 2013, 18 people were injured in a bomb blast near the BJP office in Malleswaram.
