Various events were organised to mark National Epilepsy Day, also known as the Purple Day, on Sunday.

Parijma Neurodiagnostic and Rehabilitation Centre observed the day by organising participatory activities for epileptic children. Bengaluru Police Commissioner M N Reddi and cine actor Avinash participated in the event that was followed by an interaction with a panel of experts, who discussed various issues associated with epilepsy.

Dr Suresh Rao Aroor, director and chief paediatric neurologist of Parijma, said, “Paediatric epilepsy manifests in many forms and it is different from adult epilepsy. It is important to identify the epilepsy subtype as early as possible to initiate the specific treatment for that type.”

Meanwhile, an awake surgery was performed on a 26-year-old epilepsy patient.
“We perform awake surgeries when we are operating close to the eloquent cortex in the brain. Any damage to this part would result in loss of linguistic abilities and could also affect the movement of hands and legs.

To avoid such a thing and to know to what extent the patient can be operated upon, an awake surgery is performed,” said Dr Raghavendra, Epileptologist, Vikram Hospital. The surgery was performed on Poojitha (name changed), who has been experiencing multiple seizures every day from the age of 14. Despite medical intervention and three types of medications every day, Poojitha continued to suffer from seizures.
