CCTV cameras, well-equipped cages/enclosures with better locking systems, ambulances and insurance for animal-keepers are planned to be introduced at Bannerghatta Biological Park, said Karnataka Zoo Authority chairperson Rehana Banu.
Talking to Deccan Herald about Monday’s attack by two lions on an animal-keeper at the park, she said that the incident had exposed the vulnerability of animal-keepers who are risking their lives every day.
“I have had a series of meetings with the forest officials and have also spoken to the forest minister about the lack of security for animal-keepers,” she said.
Banu said that on the lines of a few elephant kavadis whose jobs were regularised in the past, she wants to explore if it could be applied for these animal-keepers.
Srikrishna, the animal-keeper who was attacked by the lions, is recovering and his vital parameters are stable now.
Dr Venkatesh A N, senior consultant and head of department of emergency medicine, Apollo Hospital, said they are planning to suture his wounds on Thursday.
