BBMP officials inspect two restaurants that have violated SWM rules and connected sewage lines to the BWSSB main drain at Domlur on Monday.

BBMP officials will conduct special drives to check if bulk generators of waste across the city have collaborated with empanelled garbage contractors or not to dispose of trash.

In order to bring in order among the bulk generators of waste such as restaurants and hotels, the BBMP wants to ensure that they are segregating waste and are disposing it with the help of empanelled vendors.

Beginning with the drive on Monday, the BBMP health officials found that two hotels — Nandini Delux Hotel and Bhagini Icon Hotel at Domlur 2nd Stage in East zone — are not only mixing the waste, but have also connected their sewage outlet to the BWSSB’s main drain.

The BBMP has slapped a penalty of Rs 3 lakh each on the hotels.

“The hotels have to follow certain guidelines when it comes to segregating waste and both these hotels have not collaborated with the empanelled vendors to dispose of waste. Even the restaurant premises are unclean and is a major public health concern, which invited the penalty,” said Dr Sangamitra, health officer, East zone.

Officials from the BBMP and BWSSB were present during the inspection. “The bulk generators have to show the memorandum of understanding regarding their collaboration with the empanelled vendors. They did not show it today,” said Sangamitra.
