Bengaluru: BBMP Chief Commissioner M Maheshwar Rao has directed officials to register cases against the manufacturers of Plaster of Paris (PoP) Ganesha idols, which are banned in the city.
Despite the ban, the sale of PoP idols continues unchecked.
Rao also urged officials to raise awareness among the public about using eco-friendly idols during Ganesh Chaturthi, set to be celebrated on August 27.
The BBMP has identified 40 lakes across Bengaluru for idol immersion. "We will ensure barricading, trained swimmers, lighting, and cranes wherever needed,” Rao said.
He instructed officials to deploy adequate sanitation staff and transport vehicles for waste disposal at immersion sites. For safety and monitoring, he called for the installation of CCTV cameras and deployment of police personnel.
Temporary mobile immersion tanks will also be set up at key locations and junctions in each ward.
