The BBMP on Thursday cracked down on land sharks in Jakkur ward of Yelahanka Zone.

According to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, about 5.5 acres of land on survey number 99 in Kogilu village was identified for setting up a bio-methane plant.

However, the said land was allegedly encroached upon by a private developer and a layout was formed by providing various civic amenities and a compound wall was also built.

FIR against encroachers

Sarfaraz Khan, Joint Commissioner (SWM), BBMP, and other engineers visited the spot and demolished the unauthorised compound walls, drains and other structures, besides directing the zonal engineers concerned to book an FIR against the encroachers.

The BBMP had plans to set up a bio-methane plant in the area as per the recommendations of the National Green Tribunal (NGT).

However, the land was left untouched for a long time, paving the way for encroachers and land sharks in North Bengaluru to eye the prime property.

Work to begin in March

D Randeep, Special Commissioner, SWM, said a tender has been called to set up the plant in the area and the bids have been received.

He mentioned that the groundwork for the bio-methane plant would begin in March.

The BBMP has set up 13 biomethane plants in the city so far. However, not all plants have been functioning on a regular basis. It is left to be seen if this new proposed plant at Kogilu village will be ustilised.
