In an effort to make the city roads potholes free, the BBMP is laying tiki tar (rubber layer) on the roads. This tiki tar is first heated and then rolled on the concrete surface before laying the asphalt.
According to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the rubber layer helps to stop water from percolating into the ground and loosen the asphalt which is normally said to be the reason for the formation of a pothole or causing any type of damage to the road.
The laying of tiki tar work is already underway on the Madiwala underpass.
Speaking to DH, B S Prahalad, Chief Engineer of Major Roads Infrastructure, BBMP, said: "The tiki tar is laid before filling the bitumen concrete on the road. This tar ensures that the water does not percolate. This avoids the moisture in the tar and maintains the quality of the road for a long time."
The civic body had earlier used the rubber layer on the Richmond Road flyover.
"We are planning to extend the tiki tar on the other roads in the city, this will last for at least for five years. Already the major metropolitan cities like Delhi and Mumbai are using this tar," Prahalad added.
