A 20-year-old female engineering student reportedly committed suicide at her home in Tilak Nagar in southern Bengaluru on Friday evening.

A failed love affair is said to have driven her to the extreme step and the police are investigating whether it is a case of abetment to suicide.

Sowmya, who was studying third-year BE at a private college near Bannerghatta Road, returned home, locked herself in and hanged from the ceiling fan.

The incident came to light when her mother, who was not at home, returned and found the door locked from inside. She knocked on the door but didn’t get a response. On some suspicion, she peeped into the bedroom window and was shell-shocked to see her daughter hanging. She screamed to neighbours for help.

The door was broken open and the police were called. The police said they had found a death note and suspect a failed love affair. They have seized Sowmya’s mobile phone. The Tilak Nagar police have registered a case.
