Bengaluru: Activists staged a demonstration in AECS Layout, East Bengaluru, on Sunday to highlight animal suffering and promote veganism as a social justice movement.

Organised by Bengaluru Brigade for Animal Liberation along with Vegan India Movement, the protest was part of a nationwide campaign in 12 cities for India’s 79th Independence Day, stressing that animals, too, deserve freedom.

Activists engaged onlookers in discussions on veganism and ethical living.

"As our country celebrates independence, I am deliberately giving up my freedom to expose the injustice faced by animals,” said Dr Mahesh, who voluntarily confined himself.

Vegan India Movement said animals endure suffering when used for food, clothing, entertainment or other purposes.

“We believe the time has come to recognise animals as sentient beings with inherent rights to live free from exploitation. What we do to them today is nothing short of slavery,” said Nitin from the group. “Veganism is not merely a dietary choice; it is a social justice movement aimed at dismantling systems that commodify animals when we do not need to.”
