Bengaluru: The Association of People with Disability (APD), a Bengaluru-based NGO, has developed YesToAccess, India’s first AI-powered mobile app designed to evaluate public spaces for accessibility.
Using the app, users can simply point their phone’s camera at a building or structure, and the AI assesses key accessibility features such as ramps, railings, accessible toilets, tactile pathways, and navigation signage.
The app assigns an accessibility rating based on 35 parameters, displaying it on a public map to help users identify barrier-free spaces with ease and confidence.
YesToAccess serves as a digital public good, blending cutting-edge technology with community-driven efforts. By allowing individuals to contribute accessibility data, the app empowers users to play an active role in building an inclusive India.
Bridging the gap
Traditionally, persons with disabilities have relied on platforms like Google Reviews to gauge accessibility, but these reviews often lack crucial details.
YesToAccess bridges this gap by providing precise information, such as doorway width and object identification, simply by clicking a picture.
The AI conducts a comprehensive accessibility audit, and the data is then mapped — similar to hotel and food aggregator apps — allowing users to check a location’s accessibility rating before visiting.
"This not only benefits persons with disabilities, but also helps the elderly," said Bhumika Modh, part of the YesToAccess project.
Accessibility audits typically cover over 700 parameters, but they are often limited to reports submitted to building owners — many of whom take no action.
"The information rarely reaches the people who need it most," said Modh. "We wanted to create a solution that directly benefits users."
YesToAccess provides a focused and scalable approach, using AI to assess accessibility features in real-time. The app’s accuracy improves as more people contribute data, ensuring richer, more precise accessibility insights.
Nationwide accessibility initiative
Recognising its potential, the Department for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) is now leveraging YesToAccess for a nationwide accessibility audit, set to launch on February 7 in Prayagraj through a special yatra.
With its AI-powered assessments and user-driven model, YesToAccess is paving the way for a more accessible and inclusive India.
