The arrested Mohammed Fardeen, 24; Mohammed Afaan, 26; Mohammed Rayan, 21; and Sameer M, 24 had earlier argued with the victim, Babur Rayan’s friend Afrid.

Two of the suspects and both victims, in their early 20s, were students at a college near Lalbagh Main Road.

The incident occurred on September 2 between 2 pm and 5 pm. Babur said he was sitting on his scooter at the Bada Makan Ground when he saw a group of 10 people, including the four suspects, chasing Afrid with machetes.

He said Afrid escaped, but the suspects attacked him instead for being Afrid’s friend. Babur’s hand was injured, but he managed to flee. The suspects also damaged his scooter.

Babur later learnt that Afrid’s argument with Afaan and Rayan concerned ragging. The police said their probe also suggested a row over talking to a girl. Babur alleged that the suspects later visited his house and threatened his parents.

The Wilson Garden police have booked the suspects under sections 109 (1) (attempt to murder), 115 (2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 190 (unlawful assembly), 191 (rioting), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 324 (mischief), and 351 (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
