Bengaluru Mayor holds surprise midnight inspectionSlaps Rs 1 lakh fine on contractor on the spot

Catching the contractors and officials of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) off guard, Mayor Gangambike Mallikarjun and Deputy Mayor Ramila Umashankar carried out surprise midnight visits on Tuesday.

The mayor flanked by officials chose to tour the Central Business District areas like Kasturba Road, Cunningham Road, Jayamahal and other areas on a two-wheeler.

The late night visit until the midnight hours brought the mayor face to face with the actual problems of the city. Picking examples of poor quality infrastructure work, Gangambike rapped Shivaprakash, Executive Engineer of East Division.

Inspecting the pothole filling work in Jayamahal area, the mayor and team found that the contractor had adopted unscientific means to fill potholes in the area. She then slapped a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the spot.

Further, she insisted that all potholes in Jayamahal area be filled latest by Wednesday afternoon scientifically and a follow-up report is submitted to her on the same day. She also warned if the contractors fail to do so officials will be held responsible and stringent action will be initiated against them.

The mayor also ordered the removal of illegal advertisement hoardings that she found during her visit to several areas in the night. The mayor is expected to hold a meeting of senior officials at the BBMP office following her visit around the city.
