Bengaluru trader arrested for evading Rs 15-cr GST

A Bengaluru-based businessman was arrested on Friday for evading GST to the tune of Rs 15 crore.

The arrest was made by the officers of the Preventive Unit, Central Taxes, Bengaluru South GST Commissionerate, based on specific intelligence that the businessman had collected applicable GST from his customers between August 2017 and May 2018, but failed to remit it to the exchequer in time, thereby violating Section 132 of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017, said G Narayanaswamy, Commissioner of Central Tax.

When confronted with documentary evidence, the businessman admitted to his lapses and was arrested under Section 69 of the CGST Act, 2017. Offences under Section 132 of the CGST Act are punishable with imprisonment up to five years and are non-bailable.
