B'lureans come together to fight growing plastic pollution

Ahead of the World Environment Day on June 5, Bengalureans gathered in large numbers to spread awareness on the growing menace of plastic pollution in the city on Sunday.

Over 2,500 college students and 300 school students joined hands with NGOs and officials from various government departments to spread the message.

Officials from the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB), forest department, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and Environmental Management and Policy Research Institute (EMPRI) and conservationists participated in the event.

The officials, students and citizens participated in a walkathon, cyclothon and jatha (procession) from the Vidhana Soudha to Bal Bhavan in Cubbon Park. An exhibition of over 25 stalls was also organised, showcasing the hazards of plastic and the alternatives available. The stalls, which were on from 7 am to 4.30 pm, focused on ways to segregate and compost waste.
