The Deccan Herald Theatre Festival, 2014, ended on a grand note on Sunday with the performance of Bertolt Brecht’s “The Threepenny Opera” by Play Pen. The play was directed by Ashish Sen.
The play, centred on the story of Macheath, a criminal wanted for several offences, dwelt on corruption, greed and the underpinnings of politics that have been a matter of concern for societies in all ages. The stage settings, the costume design, the make-up and the impeccable dialogue delivery of the actors all synchronised into a seamless narration, even as the audience sat on the edge of their seats hanging on to every word.
Was it the music or the actors? The director or the play itself? But it was all of it in equal amount that stood out. It was a sincere rendition of Brecht’s “The Threepenny Opera”. The actors appeared to have got right under the skin of their characters, with every little nuance played out to perfection, leaving the audience with a memorable performance. The play strongly revolved around the protagonist but yet, each of the actor stole the limelight with display of sophistication of skill that they brought to their characters. Music was another special feature in the play.
Senior actor Rajit Kapur too had flown to Bangalore to watch the play directed by his friend. Speaking to Deccan Herald, he said that whenever he got a chance he had come to watch the Deccan Herald Theatre Festival.
“This reminds me of 1986 when I first came to this City to watch Ashish Sen’s play. This time too, I finished my shoot and came here to catch the play. It is an amazing performance. They must have put in a lot of effort to put out such a wonderful performance.” A packed auditorium at Chowdiah Hall was a testimony to the play’s success.
