Language enthusiasts may soon have the option of pursuing a full-fledged MA in German and Spanish from Bangalore University (BU), if a proposal of its Foreign Languages department is accepted.

“A proposal to start the master’s programme in German and Spanish has already been sent to the university. A lot of employment opportunities open up if one studies other languages along with English,” said Jyothi Venkatesh, lecturer, Department of Foreign Languages.

She was speaking at the 4th International Language Fair held here on Sunday. Presently the department offers an MA only in French and Japanese a number of diploma and certificate courses in 11 other foreign languages like Korean, Finnish, Arabic, to name a few.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Jyothi said: “The plan to start MA programme for the two languages is part of the proposal sent under the Rashtriya Ucchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA). We hope to start MA in German by this year and Spanish by next year.”

The language fair was marked by a number of cultural programmes like dance, music and fashion show and saw the participation of language students. French Consulate General, Eric Lavertu, who also was part of the programme, expressed the need for conducting more research in various languages.
