Bangalore University has decided to seek Rs one crore compensation from KPTCL for the underground cable laying project through the university campus.

Last week, students and the vice chancellor had staged a protest against the “highhanded” behaviour of Bescom and KPTCL officials.

They complained that there was a power cut for nearly six days allegedly because of the university's refusal to allow the project.

Emergency meeting

In an emergency meeting of the university Syndicate held on Tuesday to discuss the controversial project, the members decided to ask for a compensation of Rs one crore for the damage to the university infrastructure as a result of the works, including loss of old trees.

BU Vice Chancellor Prof B Thimme Gowda said, two years ago, for a project of similar proportion, the BWSSB had paid damages of Rs one crore to the university. The KPTCL had offered to pay compensation of Rs 50 lakh, but the varsity has decided to demand double the sum.

BEd colleges

The university had earlier decided to disaffiliate 21 colleges for substandard quality. Among these, 13 have obtained a stay from the court.

However, the varsity will go ahead with the disaffiliation of five colleges whose reply to the university’s show-cause notice was “not satisfactory.”

For the remaining three colleges, another Local Inquiry Committee will be set up to take a final decision on their affiliation, said Prof Thimme Gowda.
