An elderly couple died and five others were injured when a KSRTC bus ploughed into a parked truck near Nelamangala on the northern outskirts of Bengaluru in the early hours of Tuesday.

According to the Nelamangala traffic police, the KSRTC bus of Davanagere depot was heading towards the city.

At 5.30 am, the bus driver—in a bid to overtake another vehicle from the left side, near the Thippagondanahalli check post—failed to notice a truck parked on the roadside and rear-ended it. The collision completely damaged the left portion of the bus. Both the deceased, Dharmappa (68) and his wife Dhanalakshmi(58), were sitting on the front seats.

The deceased couple were natives of Nyamathi in Honnali taluk of Davangere district. They were visiting the city for a family function at a relative’s house.

The Nelamangala traffic police have registered an FIR against the bus driver for rash and negligent driving, causing death. The driver is absconding and a search for him is on.
