The Lokayukta special court on Wednesday slapped a fine of Rs 60,000 on a BWSSB engineer convicted of bribery charges.

Rangaswamy was working as a junior engineer at the Nagawara office of the BWSSB in 2011. A contractor by name Jagdish Kumar had approached him seeking a quality certificate for the work he had executed. Rangaswamy had demanded a bribe of Rs 60,000 to issue the certificate.

The contractor approached the Lokayukta and a trap was laid. The engineer was arrested red-handed while accepting the bribe of Rs 60,000. The Lokayukta special court convicted Rangaswamy for offences punishable under Prevention of Corruption Act.

He has been sentenced to one year imprisonment for offence under Section 7 and two years under Section 13 (1) (d) of the Act. The sentences run concurrently, Special Public Prosecutor for Lokayukta police D Ramesh Babu said.
