Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) will set up four sewage treatment plants (STPs) around Bellandur area to clean up Bellandur Lake which is being monitored by the National Green Tribunal.
The four STPs will come up at Bellandur Amanikere with a capacity of 90 mld (million litres per day) located at Varthur Lake; between Kalkere and Horamavu-Agara Lake at Hoamavu Agara to treat 20 mld; at Doddabele, to treat around 20 mld and Kadugodi, for treating around 6 mld.
Two more STPs are proposed - one at Kengeri bus stand to treat 60 mld and another at Yelamallappa Chetti Lake proposed to treat 15 mld.
At the moment, BWSSB is treating around 846 mld of waste water from 18 STPs. With four more STPs, the board can treat around 982 mld of waste water.
Satish N, chief engineer (waste water management) said another nine STPs are in the pipeline after which the the board will be able to treat around 1,500 mld of waste water.
The nine STPs will come up at Koramangala & Chalaghatta Valley, Hebbal, Doddabele, Vrishbhavathi valley, Hulimavu, Chikkabegur, Sarakki, Agaram and K R Puram.
"We will be not be short of the required capacity of treatment plants in the city. At the moment, around 1,300 mld of Cauvery water is being supplied to the city. With 80% of this and some borewell water coming out as waste, we are equipped to treat waste water," added Satish.
However, the STPs are not just treating sewage water.
With the recent heavy rain in the city, the STPs received sewage mixed with rainwater which decreased the functioning capacity of the STPs.
