The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has initiated the process to procure as many as 30 de-silting machines to remove silt from overflowing manholes across the City.
“All these de-silting machines, costing a little more than Rs 4.5 crore, will be procured in less than a month to remove silt from manholes in all the constituencies,” a senior BWSSB official told Deccan Herald. Each machine will be operated by a driver and two sanitary workers will also be deployed, with a payment of Rs 10,100 and Rs 9,324 each.
At present, the silt from the manholes is being removed in an unscientific manner with the help of Pourakarmikas (sanitation workers).
Officials say that using de-silting machines will speed-up the silt removing process, especially in densely populated areas in the Central Business District including in Chickpet, Shanthinagar and Gandhinagar, where complaints of overflowing underground drainage are on the rise because sanitary lines in these areas are not well-maintained.
The BWSSB, on an average, receives 30 complaints on a daily basis from each ward, the official said.
Jetting machines
Meanwhile, Krishnappa S, Engineer-in-Chief of BWSSB, said that the board had floated tenders to procure a total of 30 jetting machines to clear blockages in manholes using high-pressure water.
The BWSSB plans to use one jetting machine in each of the 198 wards. At present, there are 105 jetting machines and the board has already invited tenders for 30 jetting machines, he said. It is better late than never, said Padmanabha Reddy, Opposition Leader in the BBMP Council.
“We are waiting for the BWSSB to procure these machines and the problem of overflowing manholes is prevalent in almost all wards. This is the long-pending demand of all the corporators and every constituency should be given at least one de-silting machine”, he said.
Palike member M K Gunashekar said that these machines are the need of the hour to free Pourakarmikas from doing the inhuman work of cleaning manholes.
