In China, carbon pollution last year exceeded 2019 levels by more than half a per cent despite a draconian, though brief, lockdown to halt the virus' spread.

With helmetless driving accounting to about 40 per cent of deaths in road accidents, the Traffic police will launch a drive for strict enforcement of helmet rule in the City.

According to the data released by Traffic Training Institute, out of 1,053 accident victims since 2012, as many as 419 were motorcyclists and pillion riders.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) M A Saleem said most of the violators were youngsters who often ride at high speed without wearing helmets. “Of late, there is a rising trend of motorcyclists not fastening their helmet strap. This is very dangerous as the riders face the risk of head injury despite wearing the helmet,” he said.

Saleem said traffic police have identified certain stretches in the City where helmetless riding is rampant. He, however, refused to give details as police intend to conduct surprise checks on such stretches. First-time offenders will be issued a notice while repeat offenders invite stringent action, police said.
