Home Minister K J George on Friday said the Home Department was not accountable for cases of sexual assaults on children at schools.

“We should not blame the police for such things as such cases have occurred inside the school premises where police cannot enter without permission,” he said at a public interaction meeting in the City.

In most such incidents, it is the insiders like teachers and attenders who sexually assault girls. Statements that the police could have avoided such instances are not acceptable. In all such cases, the police have arrested the suspects, he said.

Replying a question on stringent punishment to those indulging in such acts, George said: “We are living in India where everything is bound by the law. There is law, a judicial system and several procedures. Punishment will meted out as per the law.”

The police alone cannot prevent such instances. Everyone should sit across the table and come out with measures, he added.
