Media should go beyond reporting accidents and must create awareness among the public about road safety, said cartoonists who won prizes at a state-level competition organised by the Transport Department.

Yama, the Lord of Death, was present in many of the over 120 cartoons, which will be exhibited at Chitrakala Parishath till Thursday. He was seen closely following a youth doing a wheelie and lurking beside another trying to take a selfie while riding.

From drunk-driving to jumping signals and not wearing helmets, almost all traffic violations were covered by cartoonists. Most of the offenders depicted were youth.

The Transport department organised the exhibition after conducting a state-level cartoon contest as part of the road safety awareness programme.

Chandra Gangolli, a cartoonist with a daily, said a picture speaks a thousand words and a cartoon is the same, except that it is far more effective and powerful as a medium.

Solutions for problems

Raghupati Sringeri said that as an artist with 20 years of experience, he always felt that art should engage actively with society to find solutions to problems. “We know that incidents like signal jumping, wheelies, not wearing a helmet will have major consequences. But we tend to ignore them.

Cartoons will add fun to an issue and bring an ironic touch to an otherwise regular depiction of an event,” he said. Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy said without citizens’ participation, the department cannot meet the goal of reducing the number of accidents by half in the next three years.
