The CBI has registered a case against Nagesh Shastri, who claimed to be a chartered accountant and member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, for the filing of over 1,000 "fraudulent" IT returns to claim around Rs 5 crore in refunds.

The case has also been registered against unknown officials of the IT department and Infosys Technologies Ltd, which was outsourced the job of validating returns and generating lists of cases where refunds had to be approved.
