The Centres for Advanced Legal Studies and Research will be set up as per recommendations of National Knowledge Commission. These are expected to start functioning from next year, he said. The location of the centres are yet to be decided upon.

Speaking to reporters after attending an award ceremony for Microsoft IPR scholarship programme 2009, the minister said these centres would carry out research on various aspects of law, bring out world-class journals and train legal faculty, besides facilitating multi-disciplinary approaches to law. He said the ultimate goal is to enable the Indian legal fraternity to excel overseas, similar to what the IT sector has been achieving in developed markets.
