Supporting the education of poor Muslim girls, city-based Bazm-E-Niswan Charitable Trust has distributed scholarships worth Rs 1.32 crore to 3,613 students.

Amid reports of lakhs of students dropping out of higher education during the Covid-19 pandemic, the trust realised the need to support poor Muslim girls and help them continue their education.

A release from the trust said 4,505 applications were received for the scholarships, 40 per cent more than the previous years.

"Many girls who had dropped out of higher education in 2020 came back this year. Also, there was an increased enrollment of girls in paramedical courses. Further, commerce is the most popular course among Muslim girls. Their academic performance is consistently very good year after year," the trust said.

While the highest number of scholarship recipients 1,731 were pursuing PUC courses, 1,722 students were doing undergraduate courses. About 65 diploma students and 95 post-graduate students were chosen for the scholarship. The scholarships were given to students during an event last week held at the Sheriff Centre on St Mark's Road.
