Yasin Bhatkal, the co-founder of Indian Mujahiddeen, was brought to the City in the wee hours of Saturday after the NIA Special Court in New Delhi remanded him in the custody of Bangalore City police on Friday in connection with the Chinnaswamy Stadium blast case.

The City police had sought the custody of Bhatkal a few months ago and were kept waiting as the Delhi Police Special Cell had the custody of him.

Raghavendra H Auradkar, City Police Commissioner, said: “He will remain in our custody till January 28. We will take a call on  seeking an extention of his custody later. Bhatkal was produced before the magistrate in the City, but we are not supposed to reveal any details with regards to the interrogation and investigation.”

A medical examination was conducted on the alleged terror mastermind at a government hospital in the City on Saturday afternoon and later he was shifted to an undisclosed location where a special team of the City police have begun interrogating him.

Being a high profile security target, special arrangements have been made to provide security round the clock to him.

Yasin Bhatkal is one of the prime accused in the Chinnaswamy Stadium blast case and hasn’t been charged in any other case till now in the State. A senior official here said they would question Bhatkal not only in regard to the Chinnaswamy Stadium blast, but also about the origins of the Indian Mujahiddeen and its network in coastal and Malnad districts of the State.

He said there were reports that Bhatkal had stayed at Thirthahalli in Shimoga district and, a family there had even accused him of murder.

The Delhi police had brought him to Mangalore and Chikmagalur districts last month. The City police would also question him on his possible links with the terror module that carried out the Malleswaram bomb blast last year.
