The four-hour-long event saw participation from around 100 Bengalis from various parts of the City.
They sang and danced to Tagore’s songs, recited his poems and narrated incidents in the poet’s life that inspired him to create some of his best works.
‘Social reformer too’
In his address to the audience of nearly 400, Bengalee Association President Achintya Lal Roy said that though Tagore was globally known for his literary works, he was also a social reformer and inspired people to take part in the freedom struggle.
On the occasion, the Association also released a Bengali desk calendar having rare pictures of Tagore with personalities like Mahatma Gandhi, Albert Einstein, Indira Gandhi and Netaji Subhaschandra Bose.
People of all ages, men and women, participated in the event.
The dances and recitations by children were much appreciated by the audience. Ramya Vasisht from Shimoga sang a Kannada translation of a Tagore song. She mesmerised everyone with her enchanting singing.
On Monday at 7.30 pm, at the Bengalee Association premises, Bangalore University Vice-Chancellor Dr N Prabhu Dev will participate in a discussion on Tagore’s works.
The Association will also present a soiree remembering Tagore.
