Alert traffic police averted a possible accident by arresting a highly inebriated driver who was ferrying school- children in a van on Friday evening.

The suspect Shahji Mule (45) is the driver attached to Sri Chaitanya School.

The police on Marathahalli Main Road grew suspicious as the school van was moving dangerously. The police followed the van and stopped it. Mule failed to satisfactorily answer the questions.

“We subjected him to an alcometer test and the reading was 280 mg per 100 ml of blood. The permitted level of alcohol in the blood is 30 mg per 100 ml of blood,” said a senior police officer.

There were 32 children in the bus waiting to be dropped to their houses. The police immediately arranged for another bus and sent the children home safely.

The police have informed the school authorities about the incident and are verifying Mule’s antecedents.
Mule has been booked under IPC Section 279 for rash and negligent driving endangering public lives.
