Fresh interrogation of two members of the notorious Irani gang, who are presently in jail, has revealed that they were involved in 26 cases of chain-snatching, in addition to the 41 cases solved earlier.
Based on the information provided by them, the City police have recovered 800 grams of gold the gang members had pledged with pawnbrokers.
According to the City Crime Branch police, Abujur Ali, 26, and Abul Hassan, 23, both residents of Janata Nagar, Irani Colony, Dharwad; and pawnbroker Girish Raje Gowda alias Bombay Girish, 28, a native of Hassan, were arrested in September. The police had then cracked 41 chain-snatching cases, which had taken place between 2013 and 2015 in various police station limits in the city. They had recovered gold valuables worth Rs 60 lakh from the accused.
A senior police officer said, “A few days ago, the trio, who were in judicial custody, were again taken into police custody, as we had clues that they were involved in many more chain-snatching incidents.
“During interrogation, we cracked another 26 cases and recovered 800 grams of gold. Also, based on the information provided by them, we recovered the stolen jewels from various pawnbrokers based in Dharwad.”
“We gathered vital information, as several people were coming to visit the trio at the Parappana Agrahara Central prisons. We questioned a few of them, who gave us information about the trio and their crimes. Ali will be booked under the Goonda Act, as he is the one who snatched the chains from women, while Hassan was an expert bike rider. Girish played a major role in guiding the Irani gang members to sell the stolen articles. He used to buy them and sell it to other pawnbrokers. Also, Girish used to help them in giving them contacts of pawnbrokers in other cities,” added the officer.
