Owing to the construction of the underground stretch of Namma Metro, the junction will be closed one way for three years, traffic police told Deccan Herald.
“The road was to be closed on both sides. Now that BMRCL has completed the steel decking on one side, we will close only one side of the road, diverting traffic going towards GPO,” they said.
Traffic towards GPO will have to go through King’s Road and join Ambedkar Veedhi through Cubbon Park, while the traffic moving towards the Queen’s Statue from the Indian Express Junction will be allowed to ply as usual.
‘Tsunami of traffic’
Admitting that the problem at hand is huge, Additional Commissioner (Traffic and Security) Praveen Sood said: “There is going to be a tsunami of traffic diversions”.
The CTO Junction, over the years, has been a key link between the northern and southern parts of Bangalore, with thousands of vehicles passing through the junction everyday.
“We understand that this will create a huge problem for people. It is also a problem for the department. But the department cannot say no, as this is in the larger view of the development of infrastructure in the City,” he added.
The closure of Cubbon Road has already created a huge problem on M G Road and at Siddalingaiah Circle, Hudson Circle, Basaveshwara Circle, Mekhri Circle and Cantonment area.
