A man posing as a customer, made away with gold chains worth Rs eight lakh from a jewellery store on the outskirts of the City, after diverting the attention of the shop owner on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the police, Malla Ram, owner of Santosh Jewellers at Anjana Nagara, Tavarekere, was at the counter along with two of his employees, when a man in his 30s came to the shop and asked to be shown some gold chains.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Malla Ram said: “He spent more than 15 minutes in the shop and asked us to show various designs. One of the boys gave him a bunch of gold chains on a ring. The ‘customer’ asked for another bunch. As we turned to take another set of chains, he ran away with the bunch. We chased him but he escaped,” he said.

The Tavarekere police have registered a case and are investigating. They are analysing the CCTV footage from the shop.
