The Central CEN police registered a case on Monday, following a complaint by Kishore R from the department.

Kishore said that several people in the department began receiving messages on Monday from an unknown number, with the country code +84 (Vietnam). The WhatsApp number displayed the name and photograph of Gunjan Krishna, 51, the department’s commissioner.

The suspect, impersonating the senior IAS officer, allegedly sought money through these messages, the FIR stated. The complainant informed the police that the number did not belong to Gunjan and that she had been impersonated.

The cybercrime police have launched a probe under Section 66C (identity theft) of the Information Technology (IT) Act.
