The parents of Mohammed Saqlain, a 10-year-old who died of suspected dengue in the City on Monday, have alleged medical negligence on the part of doctors at Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital.
They have claimed that the doctors at the hospital refused to administer medication in time. According to Javed Pasha, Saqlain’s father, the boy was hospitalised on Thursday. He said that every time the patient had to be given medication, the hospital wrote the prescription and asked the family to purchase the same from outside.
The hospital authorities refuted the charges. “Treatment for dengue is symptomatic. The question of specific medicine does not arise at all,” said Dr Prasanna Kumar, Resident Medical Officer, Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital.
He said that the patient’s condition was serious the day he was admitted. Besides, he was admitted at the ICU where the platelets transfusion was done and the child was on dialysis. His condition did not improve and NS1 test revealed dengue positive, Dr Prasanna said.
The boy’s relatives got him discharged early Monday morning, against medical advice and even before the samples could be sent for another test at the National Institute of Virology, he said.
According to the National Vector Borne Disease Control programme, 450 dengue cases have been reported in the City till October 15.
