A 44-year-old man was arrested by the Nelamangala police for allegedly damaging an electronic voting machine (EVM) at a polling booth in Mandigere Government School,  under Chikkaballapur Lok Sabha constituency on Thursday.

According to the police, the accused, Uday Kumar, a resident of Nelamangala, was in an inebriated state when he went into the polling booth to vote.

He created a ruckus and smashed the EVM by throwing it on the floor. “Even though the machine was destroyed, the unit which keeps vote count was not damaged as it was not kept near the ballot,” said the police.

The police added that polling was resumed as soon as the damaged EVM was replaced with a new machine. Uday Kumar has been booked under the provisions of the Representation of People’s Act and Section 353 of the Indian Penal Code.
