Bengaluru: The Kothanur police have arrested two members of the notorious Oji Kuppam gang from Tamil Nadu for robbing a man of valuables.
The gang, famous for using diversion tactics to steal, employed a different approach in this case, registered in May 2024.
The victim was accosted by two suspects — Abhishek and Kanchala Gopi, both in their mid 30s — on a two-wheeler as he exited a bank after withdrawing gold ornaments and silver items from his locker.
The victim stated that the suspects forcibly took the bag containing his valuables and fled the scene.
Following the complaint, the Kothanur police launched an investigation. After several months of probing, it was discovered that the two suspects were already in jail for another case registered at the K R Puram police station.
On December 26, the police obtained custody of the suspects by securing a body warrant.
During interrogation, the suspects confessed to the crime, a police officer reported. Acting on their information, the police recovered 324 grams of gold ornaments, 100 grams of silver items, and Rs 1.10 lakh in cash, with the total recovery valued at approximately Rs 23 lakh.
Further investigations revealed the duo's involvement in another case registered at the Kothanur police station, which was subsequently solved. The suspects were returned to judicial custody on January 7.
Hennur case
In a separate case, the Hennur police arrested a notorious thief with a history of 31 prior offences in the city.
The latest complaint, filed on December 19, involved a house break-in where 172 grams of gold, 450 grams of silver, and Rs 13,000 in cash were stolen.
The investigation led to the arrest of the suspect, Jayanathi, 33, who confessed to the crime during interrogation. The police recovered 110 grams of gold jewellery, estimated to be worth Rs 7.80 lakh, from the suspect.
Jayanathi was produced before a court on January 2 and remanded to judicial custody.
