There is sufficient water to meet the requirement of Bengaluru till May and precautionary measures are being taken by the government and Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) to tackle the water crisis, Bengaluru Development Minister K J George said on Thursday.
“The Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Limited has communicated to us that till May there will be no problem in supply of drinking water to Bengaluru,” George said at a a meeting of elected representatives and BWSSB officials that was held here to discuss measures to ensure adequate water supply.
In case of June, the government has directed the BWSSB to pump the dead storage to meet the drinking water needs of the city.
Following complaints from a few MLAs over ‘low pressure’ in water supply, dubious pricing by private water tankers and other issues, the minister directed the BWSSB officials to submit action taken report on the problems to him soon. “We cannot stop the menace of private water tankers entirely. However, we can take action against those who charge more,” he said.
BWSSB chairperson Tushar Girinath said that senior officers have been appointed as nodal heads to oversee the supply of drinking water at the Board's 31 sub-divisions. “As it is summer and there is a possibility of outbreak of infectious diseases, 0.2 mm of chlorine would be added to drinking water. The quality of water would also be tested at various places," said Girinath adding that they plan to hire 100 additional tankers to supply water in summer to public during emergency.
