A former employee of a logistics company connived with an existing staffer and another man to steal Rs 60 lakh worth of gold and platinum jewellery from a package, police said.

Anil Kumar Saini, from Rajasthan, quit the job recently but didn’t return a duplicate key of the warehouse where the company stores the consignments. He learnt through a new employee, Hoshiar Singh, that an expensive consignment had arrived from Mumbai.

Saini decided to steal the consignment. He gave the key to his associate, Anil Kumar Singh, asking him to go to the warehouse when Hoshiar would not be at work.

Singh went over there and stole five boxes of gold, platinum and diamond jewellery. He then fled to Rajasthan and joined Saini.

The jurisdictional Sampangirama Nagar police, based on a complaint from the company, started an investigation and learnt that Saini had quit the job but failed to return the duplicate key.

Since there was no forced entry into the warehouse, police deduced that someone had used the duplicate key to steal the jewellery.

A police team went to Rajasthan and caught both Saini and Singh.

Based on their confession, the police recovered the jewellery and handed it over to the company. The duo has been booked for theft and remanded in judicial custody.
