Travelling between Bengaluru and Mysuru in four express trains will be dearer by Rs 15 as the South Western Railway (SWR) has decided to convert them into superfast trains.

The change in the fare has come into effect for the Mayiladuturai Express (16231/2) and Malgudi Express (16023/4) on August 15. For commuters of Kannur/Karwar Express and Sainagar Shirdi Express (16217/8), the new rates will kick in over the next five days.

The superfast tag will not make much difference in the journey duration of the trains as the maximum time saved through this would be 30 minutes on Mayiladuturai Express. On other trains the amount of time saved varies from five minutes to 20 minutes.

Asked about the reason for the hike in fare, SWR chief public relations Officer E Vijaya said that on completion of doubling and electrification between Bengaluru and Mysuru, the running time of seven pairs of trains has been reduced by a maximum of 20 minutes. As a result, these trains have been upgraded from express to superfast between Bengaluru and Mysuru.

“The additional amount of Rs 15 towards superfast surcharge shall be payable by reserved passengers of these trains in this stretch,” she said.
