Bengaluru: Fast-tracking the projects announced is my priority now, said M Maheshwar Rao, after taking charge as the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Chief Commissioner.
Speaking to DH, Rao said that many initiatives had been announced over the last few months. "I feel it is important that these initiatives are nurtured and taken forward. That is the priority,” he said.
From tunnel roads to the construction of 17 grade separators totalling 110 km, a slew of infrastructure projects has been announced in recent months. The government has also proposed double-decker flyovers in upcoming metro corridors.
Rao is assuming office at a time when the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, 2024, has been approved and is awaiting implementation. “The Act has chalked out in detail what has to be done, and we will make sure it is done according to the stipulated guidelines,” he said.
With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting a good monsoon for the city, Rao also faces the challenge of managing the rains. “I will take stock of the situation and see what more has to be done. I am sure the officials have already identified vulnerable points in the city and that the drains have been desilted,” he added.
A lot more to be done: Tushar Girinath
Tushar Girinath, who served as the BBMP chief commissioner for nearly three years, said that much more remains to be done in the city.
Speaking after handing over charge to M Maheshwar Rao, Girinath noted, “In such a big city, there is always more to do. We are never satisfied. We have done a lot of work, and there is much more ahead.”
He added that the government had extended strong support to the BBMP. “Now, there are about 10 to 12 IAS officers working at the BBMP. The government has given enough resources and, as a result, we have done good work,” he said.
