The income tax department has set up 54 special counters at Palace Grounds to help salaried persons and pensioners to file their income tax returns till July 31.

The special counters were inaugurated by Ashok Kumar Sinha, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax (International Taxation). According to a release, since the assessees with total income exceeding Rs 5 lakh are required to file their returns electronically, e-filing intermediaries and Tax Return Preparers (TRPs) will be available.

In addition, ATMs and bank extension counters are also set up to help instantaneous payment of taxes.

There were counters like PAN service (NSDL) counters, medical support unit, food courts and help desks and even a Centralised Processing Centre (CPC) to receive acknowledgement of the e-returns filed. The three-day event will be held at Gayathri Vihar, Palace Grounds, between 10 am and 5 pm.

Elderly made to wait

Senior citizens who came to pay their taxes faced server and Internet problems at the counters, where they were forced to wait for a long time. Many people complained that they were made to wait for two hours by income tax officials and there were no proper arrangements to solve the problems.
