The much-awaited eight-lane flyover at the Okalipuram Junction has finally got a deadline. It will be inaugurated by December 15 of this year, according to Mayor R Sampath Raj.

The Mayor, along with K T Nagaraj, chief engineer (Projects), BBMP, inspected the work on Tuesday morning.

Work within deadline

Raj has directed the contractors of the project to complete the work within the stipulated deadline.

“Although the company sought an extension, I directed them to complete at least the first phase of the project by December 15. The first phase involves the completion of the flyover from Malleswaram to the city railway station and from Rajajinagar to the city railway station,” he explained.

The eight-lane flyover, aimed at easing traffic, is being built at a cost of Rs 352 crore. The civic body has paid Rs 154 crore for the three-acre plot belonging to the railways for the implementation of the project which involves eight underpasses and two pedestrian paths, Raj said.

It was necessary to set a deadline since the public is being inconvenienced due to the construction that has being going on for a long time. Commuters heading towards Vijayanagar, Rajajinagar and Malleswaram will now be benefited since traffic and travel time will both be reduced, the Mayor said.

“The contractors have been warned that quality should not suffer due to hastening of the project. Commuters’ safety is top priority and necessary precautions will be in place. The remaining work will be completed by February 2018,” the Mayor added.
