For the third time  in a week, police shot at a history-sheeter who was  fleeing after robbing a man in North Bengaluru in the early hours of Monday. He was injured in the leg.

Ashwath (22) waylaid one Anniyappa at  Mariyappa Palya in Rajagopala Nagar, stealing  his scooter, mobile phone and ₹300 in cash. Anniyappa complained to the jurisdictional RMC Yard  police. The cops set up bandobast in the area.

Around 2.30 am, a police team spotted Ashwath on ESI Hospital Main Road. When Akash, a constable, tried to catch him, Ashwath purportedly attacked him with a lethal weapon.  Mohammad Mukarram, the police inspector, intervened and shot Ashwath in the leg.

The suspect was later admitted to Victoria Hospital while Akash is being treated at KC General Hospital.

"Ashwath didn't surrender despite a  warning by the inspector  and attacked the constable. The inspector was forced to shoot him in the leg," said Chethan Singh Rathor, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North).

Ashwath is accused of four robberies or thefts and was released on bail  just a month ago.
