The police have formed four special teams to nab the car driver, who made away with 18.5 kg of jewellery worth about Rs 6 crore belonging to a Bengaluru-based jeweller, on the outskirts of the Kolar on Saturday.

Raju Bhat, owner of Om Jewellers, located at Nagarthpet in Bengaluru, had assigned driver Babu, Papu, Gopal Singh and Thimmappa to transport the gold from Kolkata to Bengaluru.

On reaching Kolar,Babu sent the other three to a hotel for breakfast stating that he would be in the car. Soon after, Babu fled the scene with the gold abandoning the car near Tamaka on the outskirts of Kolar.

Babu, a resident of Nandagudi in Bengaluru Rural district, had joined Bhat’s jewellery store as a driver just a month ago. He had gone to Kolkata twice earlier with others to bring gold.

“Babu has switched off his mobile phone after the incident. The abandoned car has been seized,” Kolar Sub Division Deputy Superintendent of Police K Ashok Kumar told Deccan Herald.
