Gang arrested for robbing lone travellers in Whitefield

Police have arrested four members of a gang who robbed pedestrians and motorists at a knifepoint on the IT corridors of Whitefield and Mahadevapura.

Based on a tip-off, the police arrested ragpickers Mohammad Rasool (19), Siraj Shaikh (20), both of Muthsandra village and natives of West Bengal; Afsar Shaikh (20), of Chinnappanahalli engaged in welding work, and Pradeep (22), of Kundalahalli and a school van driver.

The suspects used to target pedestrians and motorists travelling alone, waylay them and rob their valuables while threatening them with matchetes.

During the time of the arrest on Friday as well, the accused were waiting for their victims near Chinnappanahalli.

The police have recovered eight mobile phones, three motorcycles that they use to rob and matchets and rods. The suspects were produced before the magistrate who remanded them to judicial custody.
