According to the Soladevanahalli police, prime accused Murthy had requested his friend and trader Palakshappa, a resident of Matkur, to meet him near a bus stop. When Palakshappa reached the bus stop at around 9.30 pm, five other associates of Murthy came in an auto and waylaid them.

The gang ordered Palakshappa to part with the money. When he refused, they asked Murthy to talk to Palakshappa's wife and arrange the cash. In fact, the gang let off Murthy and waited for him to come back with the money. When he didn't return, they got angry, attacked and tied Palakshappa and later threw him out of the car and fled with the vehicle.
