Gang held for selling animal pelts, horns

The Mahalakshmi Layout police have arrested a group of eight who were trying to sell wild animals’ skin and horns near Mahalakshmi Layout on Saturday. The police have seized one leopard skin, one deerskin and 6 deer horns.

The suspects have been identified as Manjunath Rathnakar (30), Krishna Ganapa (60), Uday Gangadhar Raikar (48), Uday Ramanaik (59), Mahendra Hegde (19), Manjunath Naik (24), Raghavendra Narayana Poojari (27) and Sunil Naik (24), all residents of Uttara Kannada district. The locals, who noticed the suspects carrying a bag and moving around suspiciously in the area, alerted the police.

The accused claimed that the animal pelts and horns belonged to someone named Prabhakar Naik and got it from him to sell. All of them worked on a commission basis, a police officer said. The Mahalakshmi Layout police have registered a case. The suspects were sent to judicial custody.
